Microsoft executive management doesn't dictate how divisions, groups, or teams develop and test software Teams are free to experiment, use tried-and-true techniques, or a combination of both They are also free to create their own mandatory practices on the team or division level as the context dictates Office, for example, has several criteria that every part of Office must satisfy to ship, but those same criteria might not make sense in a small team shipping a Web service The freedom in development processes enables teams to innovate in product development and make their own choices There are, however, a select few required practices and policies that every team at Microsoft must follow These mandatory requirements have little to do with the details of shipping software The policies are about making sure that several critical steps are complete prior to shipping a product.

The most significant change is that all the targets use properties; there is no hard coding of machine names or other details in the targets. These properties have to be set in a properties file or passed in on the command line. The deployment task also needs to know the absolute directory into which FTP-uploaded files go, as seen by the web server. Usually it is a subdirectory of the account used to upload the files. The targets to deploy to the remote server are all in place. All that remains is to execute them with the appropriate properties predefined. We are going to do this, but we plan to deploy to more than one server and do not want to cut and paste targets, or invoke Ant with different command line properties. Instead, we want a single build run to be able to deploy to multiple destinations, all using the same basic targets. This means we need to be able to reuse the targets with different parameters, a bit like calling a subroutine. We need <antcall>. 7.6.1 Interlude: calling targets with <antcall> The <antcall> task is somewhat controversial: excessive use of this task usually means someone has not fully understood how Ant works. As long as you use it with restraint, it is a powerful task. The task lets you call any target in the build file, with DEPLOYMENT

any property settings you choose. This makes it equivalent to a subroutine call, except that instead of passing parameters as arguments, you have to define well known properties instead. Furthermore, any properties that the called target sets will not be remembered when the call completes. A better way to view the behavior of <antcall> is as if you are actually starting a new version of Ant, setting the target and some properties on the command line. When you use this as a model of the task s behavior, it makes more sense that when you call a target, its dependent targets are also called. This fact causes confusion when people try to control their entire build with <antcall>. Although it is nominally possible to do this with high-level tasks which invoke the build, test, package, and deploy targets, this is the wrong way to use Ant. Usually, declaring target dependencies and leaving the run time to sort out the target execution order is the best thing to do. Our deployment task in listing 7.5 is the exception to this practice. This target can deploy to multiple remote servers, simply by invoking it with <antcall> with the appropriate property settings for that destination. That is why we left out any target dependencies: to avoid extra work when a build deploys to a sequence of targets. To illustrate the behavior, let s use a project containing a target that prints out some properties potentially defined by its predecessors, do-echo:

7 . . Update the Page_Load method in the Default .aspx page to load the data from the application s dictionary . The application state is available through the page s reference to the Application object . Accessing data in the dictionary is a matter of indexing it correctly . After loading the data from the dictionary, apply it to the DataSource property in the GridView and bind the DataGrid:

There are few mandatory engineering policies, but products that fail to adhere to these policies are not allowed to ship Some examples of areas included in mandatory policies include planning for privacy issues, licenses for third-party components, geopolitical review, virus scanning, and security review Expected vs Mandatory Mandatory practices, if not done in a consistent and systematic way, create unacceptable risk to customers and Microsoft Expected practices are effective practices that every product group should use (unless there is a technical limitation) The biggest example of this is the use of static analysis tools (See 11, "Non-functional Testing") When we first developed C#, for example, we did not have static code analysis tools for that language It wasn't long after the language shipped, however, before teams developed static analysis tools for C# One-Stop Shopping Usually, one person on a product team is responsible for release management.
